The Lieutenancy of Dunbartonshire

VISIT OF HRH THE PRINCESS ROYAL TO THE GATHERING OF SCOTLAND'S CHURCHES TRUST HELD IN NEW KILPATRICK PARISH CHURCH, BEARSDEN, ON WEDNESDAY 8 OCTOBER 2014.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory OBE received HRH The Princess Royal at New Kilpatrick Parish Church, Bearsden, for the Gathering of Scotland's Churches Trust of which She is the Patron.   The Lord-Lieutenant was accompanied by Miss Alex Mennie, a Young Leader with Girlguiding Dunbartonshire, acting as his cadet for the day.

 The Princess Royal and 150 Delegates were warmly welcomed by the Reverend Roddy Hamilton MA BD, Minister of New Kilpatrick Parish Church, following which there were reports from Mr Robin Blair, Chairman of the Trust, and Mr Stuart Beattie, Director.   The Princess Royal was invited to address the Delegates and She said how delighted She was to be at the Gathering in such a beautiful Church.   She praised the work of the Trust as being vital for the preservation of Scotland's Churches of all denominations and She thanked all those whose work made it possible.

A small posy of flowers was presented to Her Royal Highness by Helen Cooke, aged 8 years, a member of New Kilpatrick Parish Church Sunday School.

The Princess Royal then walked through Bearsden shopping precinct where crowds of people applauded, and She made her way to Bearsden Burgh Hall where a group of pupils from Bearsden Primary School had gathered to wave the flags that they had made especially for Her visit.

The Princess was welcomed by Councillor Una Walker, Provost of East Dunbartonshire, who hosted a finger buffet luncheon for all who took part in the Gathering.   The Princess Royal talked to many small groups of those present and took her leave at 3pm after a most successful visit.

 Pupils of Bearsden Academy sang a beautiful arrangement of Abide With Me accompanied by 8 violin students with one of the highlights being a solo violin playing The Last Post.

At the conclusion of the Gathering, The Princess was invited to view the newly restored World War 1 Memorial in the west porch and to unveil a small plaque to commemorate Her visit to the Church and to the Memorial.   The Reverend Roddy Hamilton led the re-dedication of the Memorial, 2 Ministers from neighbouring Churches gave a reading and a prayer, and 2 Standard Bearers from the Royal British Legion were in attendance as well as those responsible for the restoration work.
