Rear Admiral Michael Gregory OBE was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire by Her Majesty The Queen in October 2008.   He had had a wide ranging career in the Royal Navy spanning 36 years.   Most of this time was spent in the Submarine Service with three Submarine Commands followed by command of the Frigate HMS Cumberland.   He was awarded the OBE for the longest continuously submerged patrol in Royal Navy history.

He was then Assistant Director Naval Staff Duties in the MOD Whitehall and Naval Defence Attaché (Policy) in Washington DC.  He finished his career as Flag Officer, Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland.  On retirement from the Royal Navy he became CEO of two Industry Support Organisations.  He is also a Brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers; The Queen's Body Guard in Scotland.

Rear Admiral Gregory is widowed and has four children.

QAVS 2016 PRESENTATION

At a ceremony hosted by West Dunbartonshire Council in Clydebank Town Hall last night Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, Rear Admiral  Mike Gregory OBE, presented the Vale of Leven Autism & Asperger's Group (VOLAAF) with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2016.   Provost Douglas McAllister praised the members of the Group present for all that they had achieved in the 5 years since it was formed.   The Lord Lieutenant congratulated them on receiving such a prestigious Award which is the equivalent of an MBE.   The Group which is parent/carer led set up its cente in the Vale of Leven 5 years ago.   They had to raise over £40,000 to move into the current premises and earlier this year completed further works on the centre for which they had to raise over £130,000.   The group provides specific support for children and young adults who are on the Autism or Asperger's spectrum.  It also provides support for parents, carers and siblings.   They can be contacted on 01389 750834.

The Lord Lieutenant is pleased to announce that he has appointed Mrs Joyce Young, Chief Executive of West Dunbartonshire Council, to the Post of Clerk to the Lieutenancy of Dunbartonshire.   She will be assisted by Mrs Stacy Walker, Leadership Support Officer of West Dunbartonshire Council, as the Lieutenancy Officer.   He was also pleased to thank the outgoing Clerk, Mrs. Belinda Ruthven, for her assistance to the Lieutenancy over many years.   Mrs White took up the role on 1st September 2016.

MERCHANT NAVY DAY

West Dunbartonshire Council, in common with Local Authorities throughout the United Kingdom, raised the Red Ensign at the Council Offices, Garshake Road, on Saturday 03 September 2016 at 11.00 to mark Merchant Navy Day.   Merchant Navy Day is the United Kingdom's opportunity to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage, and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchany Navy.   Provost Douglas McAllister was joined by Vice Lord Lieutenant Gill Aitkenhead MBE, Deputy Lieutenant Owen Sayers MBE, Lieutenancy Officer Stacy Walker, Deputy Provost John Miller, Jackie Baillie MSP, and Councillors Jim Finn, Jim Brown & Denis Agnew together with Lieutenant Commander George Troup BEM and Officers and Sea Cadets from Clydebank who formed a Guard of Honour.  Provost McAllister welcomed all present and paid tribute to all those past and present who have served in the Merchant Navy.  VLL Gill Aitkenhead read out a message from HRH The Duke of Wessex.   The Ensign was then raised by the Sea Cadets.   Provost McAllister thanked the Sea Cadets and remarked on how smart they looked.

Congratulations are extended to Ms Mary McLean of Alexandria who is celebrating her 100th birthday today.

She worked in the local area all of her life starting work at 14 as a housemaid and then moved on to work at the Torpedo factory and then moved on to Westclox.  She retired 40 years ago from her final job at the distillery.  Her lifelong passion has been gardening.  She has a family history of longevity as her mother lived till she was 104.  Deputy Lieutenant Lumsden Mathieson presented Mary with a congratulatory card from Her Majesty The Queen.

CLYDEBANK BLITZ COMMEMORATION SERVICE

Lord Lieutenant Rear Admiral Mike Gregory OBE today joined with the local community in Clydebank to commemorate those who lost their life on the nights of 13th & 14th March 1941 in the Clydebank Blitz.   Together with local dignitaries and members of the Clydebank and Polish community he laid wreaths at the memorials in Dalnottar Cemetery and at the Polish memorial in Solidarity Plaza, Clydebank.

11th JANUARY 2017

Congratulations to Professor Alex & Mrs Shelia Gardner who celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary today at  Balquhidder Care Home in Alexandria; the couple were married in Cambuslang.   Alex spent some time in the RAF in the 50's and later became a professor of psychology.   Shown in the picture (opposite) on the television screen above the happy couple is their Best Man, Jack, who was able to join the couple via a live feed.  Also shown in the picrure is Deputy Lieutenant Lumsden Mathieson who presented them with a congratulatory card from HM The Queen.

The annual presentation of the Caledonian Awards took place on Friday 25 November 2016 in Milngavie Town Hall.   Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Morag Hart MBE JP presented the Junior and Standard Awards to pupils from Campsie View School in Kirkintilloch and pupils from Kelbourne Park School, Linburn Academy, Parkhill Secondary School and St. Oswald's School in Glasgow.

ANNUAL SERVICES OF REMEMBRANCE

The Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, Rear Admiral Mike Gregory OBE and his Deputies attended Services of Remembrance throughout Dunbartonshire today representing Her Majesty The Queen. The Lord Lieutenant said ‘I would like to pay tribute to all those who attended in such inclement weather to remember our service personnel, past and present, who continue to live with the physical and mental scars of conflict, and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.   It is heartening to see the number of persons attending these Services grow year on year.’

GIRLGUIDING DUNBARTONSHIRE ANNUAL REVIEW 2016 

The Annual Review of Girlguiding Dunbartonshire was held in St. Mary's Church, Kirkintilloch, which was filled with families, friends and supporters together with girls from all the sections.   County President Morag Hart MBE JP DL welcomed all present and introduced Ann Jarvis, Deputy Provost, East Dunbartonshire Council, who said that she was delighted to see so many young people present and looked forward to hearing from them during the evening.   Awards were presented by Deputy Lieutenant Professor Frank Dunn CBE MBChB FRCP FACC who also addressed those present and spoke of the important values that Girlguiding teaches young girls and which they can develop in the movement and take forward into adulthood.   Maxine Gow, County Commissioner, presented her annual report during which members of the various sections entertained those present with singing and reports on the activities in which they had taken part during the year.   The evening concluded in the church hall where everyone was able to enjoy home baking with tea and coffee.

100th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Congratulations to Mrs Jeannie Houston on her 100th birthday. Mrs Houston lives in the Balquidder Nursing Home in Alexandria.   She was a nurse in the army during World War 2 and her ambition had been to go to the Armistice Parade in London this year, but unfortunately she is not strong enough.   If she is able she may go to the parade in Clydebank.   Deputy Lord Lieutenant Lumsden Mathieson presented Mrs Houston with a congratulatory card from  Her Majesty The Queen and Deputy Provost John Miller presented her with a card and gifts from West Dunbartonshire Council.

CLYDEBANK MUSICAL SOCIETY

Lord Lieutenant Mike Gregory was the guest of Provost Douglas McAllister at the Junior Section of Clydebank Musical Society's production of West Side Story on Friday evening in the Clydebank Town Hall.   At a reception following the show he commented that he had thoroughly enjoyed the production which he thought was marvellous.   He also said "I applaud West Dunbartonshire Council's support of the Arts and in particular this production of West Side Story by the talented youths of the Junior Section of Clydebank Musical Society and I congratulate everyone involved in the production of such an enjoyable show"

DIAMOND WEDDING CELEBRATION

Congratulations to Thomas and Catherine Stewart who recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding with family and friends at the Stables Restaurant where Deputy Lieutenant Tom Finnigan presented them with a congratulatory card from Her Majesty The Queen, and Deputy Provost John Miller  presented gifts on behalf of West Dunbartonshire Council.   The happy couple were married in Riverside Church, Dumbarton, on 11 September 1956.

At a ceremony hosted by East Dunbartonshire Council in the Southbank Marina Buildings at Kirkintilloch, Lord Lieutenant Mike Gregory OBE presented Mrs Nan Middleton with the British Empire Medal of the Order of the British Empire which was bestowed upon her by Her Majesty The Queen in the Birthday Honours' List 2016.

ANNUAL LIEUTENANCY DINNER

Lord Lieutenant  Mike Gregory OBE, the Vice Lord Lieutenant & Deputy Lieutenants, with partners, met at the Golden Jubilee Hotel, Clydebank, for the annual Lieutenancy Dinner.   Following a most enjoyable meal the Lord Lieutenant welcomed the new Clerk to the Lieutenancy, Mrs Joyce White, Chief Executive of West Dunbartonshire Council, and her husband Drew, and thanked her for the professionalism that she has brought to the role.   He then proposed the Loyal Toast following which a commemorative photo was taken .
